Video Game Art and Animation

Over the course of two semesters my skill level jumped from a 2 to a 9 (10 being the best). This course was the realization of a personal goal of mine to learn how the video game companies worked and the mastery of modern day software such as 3DS Max, ZBrush, Photoshop, Unread Developers Kit and other random developers software's and add-ons.

The Draconian is a creature from the Dragonlance book series. The character is a bastardized creation of dragon and man. I envisioned this creature to be a end boss character that you would fight and then take his helmet as a weapon. The Draconian bust moved around very nicely when animated. Lots of fun :)

The Cash Register is used in the War of the Patriots video featured on this blog's Video page. It was meant as a two sided screen with a hand scanner used to pay for your drinks. On the other side there is a key pad graphic that the bartender uses to input the patrons order. During this lesson I was working on getting my normals to chamfer the hard edges away, making them softer. The surface is a coffee stained plastic and the look is inspired by the Mass Effect franchise.

This Robot cop is rigged and has motion capture data that I acted out in the mocap studio. This was my second biped model but my first rigged and animated character. The entire model was taken piece by piece into ZBrush and meticulously edited to make the leather, neck, metal clips and pock marked metal feet look natural and realistic. Poly count was a consideration and I had to keep the model under 10,000.

The Rocker is my first model and he struggled for Identity but I still liked him enough to use it for an animation set that included a Dean Guitar model. The video can be seen at the end of my demo reel on the video page of this blog.

This car model was an experiment in using 3ds max stock textures and was used for a car animation set. I also blended the model into photo's of environments using Photoshop. I had an industrial design in mind when making this object. The Idea was a smart car with a cockpit style one seat behind the other layout and instead of hiding the engine you would display it like they are displayed on motor cycles. A little bit of engine art if you will!!

The Staff of the Warhorse was done in the last stages of my study at Seneca and an updated version can be seen on my home page.

This small environment scene was made to be run in the Unreal engine. As you can see there is a in game character running around shooting. And yes a scorpion can fit in this garage!
